“Mum, my hands hurt!”
How would you feel if your child had to suffer the pain of eczema every single day and nothing you tried would make it go away?
This is what happened in Susan’s family. Susan (not her real name) is a pharmacist and when her 5-year-old niece Michelle developed eczema as a young child Susan and her sister, Michelle’s mother, began the search to find something that would relieve Michelle’s pain.
What is eczema?
Eczema (also known as atopic dermatitis) is a recurring skin condition that affects nearly a third of Australians at some point in their life. It is not infectious and is most common in people with a family history of other atopic disorders, such as asthma. It affects all ages but usually develop in very early childhood.
Many children grow out of the condition, but some are affected for life. Adult-onset eczema can be caused by other factors including medications. Eczema often has no known cause, it can flare for no obvious reason and there is no definitive cure; however, it can be well managed with the right products.
What are the symptoms of eczema?
In those with eczema, the skin barrier does not function properly and cannot retain water easily. As a result, it dries out very quickly and becomes cracked, inflamed and itchy. Scratching and friction from touching everyday surfaces can lead to chaffing, bleeding and gradual thickening of the skin.
Some products can actually make eczema symptoms worse, especially if they contain alcohol, perfumes or other irritants. When the skin is dry and inflamed it becomes more sensitive and vulnerable to the passage of allergens, leading to other health issues.
How does it affect people’s daily lives?
Eczema has an impact on many activities most people take for granted. It can restrict the function of the hands making things like cooking, typing and even holding a pen difficult. When it occurs on the feet it can make walking extremely painful and may lead to restricted mobility.
The effects flow on to the whole family too. Babies are constantly scratching and often struggle to sleep so their parents also become sleep-deprived. The frustration and guilt because they can’t make it better can also be extremely traumatising for parents.
Children and adults alike also suffer from the stigma of public scrutiny and even ridicule. Because eczema can be quite visible, it can affect self-esteem and lead to mental health issues in the long term.
Some of the daily management tips that sufferers share include:
- Keeping fingernails short to help prevent breaking the skin when scratching
- Avoiding activities that cause extreme changes in body temperature such as hot baths or some forms of exercise.
- Looking for patterns in flare-ups and learning what triggers them. (For example stress or particular foods.)
- Using hypoallergenic products on the body and also around the house
- Applying moisturiser immediately after showering to help protect the skin’s natural moisture barrier, and reapplying it throughout the day.
Michelle’s family had been doing all of these things but even with all the products available through the pharmacy, they struggled to find skin care products that were both gentle and effective on her.
That was until Susan came across a new range available at her pharmacy. The Dalan d’Olive Intensive Hand & Body Cream stood out as the one to try first, so she gave some to her sister to use on Michelle. They were all amazed to see her damaged skin improve noticeably within days. Soon Michelle’s hands were completely clear of eczema and she was pain-free.
While the family understand that Michelle’s eczema can reoccur at any time, they now have a supply of this life-changing cream at hand, ready to treat any flare-up before it takes hold again.
